The British Citizenship Ceremony was first held at Brent Town Hall in Wembley and has now spread to other local councils. Our event photographers have been there since the start and have a provided Brent Council and the new citizens with a first class photographic service.

Congratulations to Mark Rimmer OBE

Mark Rimmer is the Director of Brent Council's Registrars Service and plays a key advisory role in the running of British Citizenship Ceremonies throughout the UK. In recognition of years of dedication and hard work Mark Rimmer has been awarded an OBE - a truely amazing achievement and well deserved recognition for a man who thinks nothing of going the extra mile - Well done!

About the Ceremony

The British Citizenship Ceremony lasts for about 30 minutes. A local celebrity is normally there to present the certificates and the medals. The latest mayor of Brent, The gorgeous Bertha Joseph is one of these (see the photos above) along with ex-mayor Len Snow, ex-mayor Peter Lemon, Joyce Bacchus and current mayor Rameshchandra Patel.

Of the 110,000 people who become British Citizens each year the Brent Council Registrars Service processes about 3,500 of these and is one of the busiest citizenships venues for this reason.

At the ceremony, every applicant for British citizenship is required to swear an oath of allegiance to the crown and make a pledge to uphold the values and laws in the UK. Although the format is quite formal, the emphasis is to make sure that it is an enjoyable and meaningful experience for the citizens.

Citizenship Ceremonies were introduced as a means of making sure that becoming a citizen wasn't just a bureaucratic process, but an event to be celebrated
